Main Street lost its French landlord and Merriweather stopped charging admission. If you have lived in Howard County for more than a few years, the summer of 2026 will feel like a soft reboot. The places that defined a Saturday night a decade ago are handing their keys to new operators, and the county's biggest cultural venue is now surrounded by a ring of free programming that quietly competes with its own ticketed calendar.
The interesting question is not what to do this weekend. It is where the county's center of gravity has moved.
The Main Street handover
For half a century, dinner in Old Ellicott City meant a decision about whether tonight was a Tersiguel's night. The beloved Tersiguel's restaurant building on Main Street closed after 50 years in December 2025, and the sign now reads "Coming Soon! Pizzeria|Bistro River House on Main."
Nathan Sowers bought the space when Tersiguel's closed, at 8293 Main St., and he and his wife, Kimberly Kepnes, are renovating for the latest iteration of their River House Pizza Co. The connection is not accidental. Sowers worked at Tersiguel's as an apprentice while he was a stay-at-home dad, then began focusing on bread-making and pizza, and River House Pizza Co. was born.
That is a specific kind of succession. A fine-dining apprentice returning to his mentor's building with a wood-fired concept is not the same story as a chain filling a vacancy. It is also a bet on foot traffic that the town has been trying to rebuild for years.
"A vibrant dining scene benefits everybody in town. It benefits all the merchants. It benefits the other restaurants."
That is Mark Hemmis, who owns The Phoenix on Upper Main and serves as treasurer of Ellicott City Partnership, and his framing is worth taking seriously. Downtown Ellicott City runs on cross-traffic. One anchor closing and another opening a few doors down changes what a Saturday walk looks like.
A block of the same street is also getting a new tap house. Walker's Restaurant Group, the team behind Walker's Tap & Table, Rosie's Delicatessen and Walker's on Main, is taking over the former Black Flag Social House space with a menu built around inventive dishes and brick-oven pizza, plus a rotating draft list that will always keep at least two of Black Flag's beers on tap. The new concept is Barrington Tap & Table.
The Route 40 belt is where the churn is loudest
Old Ellicott City gets the headlines. The Baltimore National Pike corridor gets the openings.

Tony's of N.Y., a fast-casual Italian eatery, is expanding to a 2,494-square-foot space in Ellicott City's Enchanted Forest Shopping Center at 10040 Baltimore National Pike. A block of that size in a shopping center anchor slot is a real commitment, not a pop-up.
Farther east, Meating BBQ & Buffet, at 4745 Dorsey Hall Drive in Ellicott City, soft-opened in March under owner Frank Lee. The northeast Chinese barbecue category is thin in Howard County, and Dorsey Hall has historically leaned toward everyday errands. Adding a destination concept there changes the trip.
Mezeh Mediterranean Grill at 4394 Montgomery Road in Long Gate Shopping Center joined a chain that already runs more than 50 locations across Virginia, D.C., New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York City and elsewhere in Maryland, with the owners choosing Ellicott City to help fill a void. Long Gate is another reminder that the county's growth in casual dining is concentrated in retrofit spaces along the pike, not in new construction.
The read across all three: if you have not driven Route 40 with fresh eyes in six months, you are missing a real shift in what a weeknight dinner looks like without leaving the zip code.
Merriweather's free layer is the real story
Everyone knows Merriweather Post Pavilion. The under-covered story is what has grown up around it.
The Merriweather Arts & Culture Center presents the Columbia Festival of the Arts free LakeFest Weekend June 12 to 14, 2026, a three-day event featuring performances from vertical dance company EVENTI VERTICALI of Italy, live music on the new LakeStage, an invitational fine arts and crafts show, food trucks, a beer and wine garden, and participatory workshops. Their SPHERE performance features dancers suspended 60 feet above the ground. That is not typical suburban festival programming.
The summer concert series is the piece most residents underuse. The 2026 AMPED in the Park lineup runs 6/4 Lakecia Benjamin "We Dream" Album Release Show, 6/18 Marielle Kraft, 7/9 Raul Midón, 7/23 Tabitha Meeks, 8/6 Birckhead, and 8/20 LADAMA, free and open to the public.
Raul Midón in a suburban park on a Thursday, for free, is the kind of booking that would headline a paid summer series in another market. The venue is Color Burst Park at 6221 Mango Tree Rd, and RSVPs are open on the Merriweather District site.
A short list of what else is running weekly:
- Free Monday yoga at The Chrysalis at Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods, 6 to 7 p.m., running through the summer.
- Merriweather Movie Night, with Back to the Future on the current calendar. Bring a blanket.
- Pilates on the Lakefront at Merriweather Lakehouse on Sunday mornings.
- The AAPI Festival and Hispanic Heritage Festival, both returning to Color Burst Park later in the season.
The programming layer around the pavilion is dense enough that a resident could put together a full month of Thursdays and Sundays without opening a wallet. That is unusual for a Howard Hughes district, and it is worth using while it lasts.
When a ticket is worth it
The pavilion itself still carries the marquee nights. If you are picking one, the calendar has options across genres.

Two practical notes for anyone who has not been recently. Merriweather does not allow glass bottles, cans, coolers or outside beverages other than one factory-sealed water bottle, and personal food items are permitted only in a clear disposable plastic bag to display at the gate. Low-backed lawn chairs are still fine, which changes the value calculation on lawn seats versus pavilion tickets on a hot night.
A weekend template for people who already live here
If you are trying to make August feel different from June without driving to the Bay, the pattern that actually works this summer looks like this.
Saturday morning is for downtown Ellicott City. Walk Main Street, check whether River House on Main has opened its doors, grab coffee, and end at The Phoenix or one of the shops on Upper Main. Saturday night is the Route 40 experiment: pick one of Tony's, Meating BBQ, or Mezeh you have never tried and stop treating the pike as a commute route.
Sunday belongs to Merriweather Park. Yoga at The Chrysalis on Monday if you are still in town, or LakeFest and AMPED in the Park on the Thursdays that work with your schedule. If you have out-of-town guests visiting in September, one of the pavilion nights above is the answer to "what should we do while we're here."
The county has always been strong on quiet weekends. What is different this summer is how much of it is programmed, free, and within a fifteen-minute drive of most Howard County front doors. The residents who use it will feel like they got a much bigger county this year without paying for a bigger house.
